Art of Buna e.V.

{Buna – Ethiopian for coffee} Art of Buna is place of symbiosis. The gallery – which also serves as a small shop and café – determinedly evades the art establishment. Here you will find pictures, photographs, graphic images and much more, all of which are deeply rooted in their culture – far away from the mechanisms of any kind of market. We see art as what it should be – a means of communication. Communication between the artist and the viewer. We believe that art always becomes particularly exciting when it encourages a dialogue between different cultures, opinions and attitudes. With a range of exhibitions, talks and workshops, we want to make a contribution towards a debate in society and to encourage people from a wide variety of backgrounds, and with different sets of experience, to enter into dialogue. We invite you to discover something new, to encounter people and art – and at the same time to enjoy a cup of delicious Ethiopian coffee.

Commitment to both cultural and social issues…

As well as exhibitions, we also have regular literary readings, film screenings, talks and small-scale acoustic concerts. In our little shop, you will find some highly unusual items! Things that have been created by people, with a lot of love and passion for what they do – exclusive limited-edition art prints, as well as posters and post cards. Fair trade/organic T-shirts from Herr So&So which have been screen-printed by hand. Apart from this, you will also find both second-hand and new music recordings.

We believe that commitment to cultural and social issues go hand and hand. In 2017, we launched the initiative Artists for Cap Anamur. Through this initiative, artists donate pieces of work to an art collection to raise money for the Cologne aid organisation Cap Anamur / Deutsche Not Ärzte e.V. As our name might suggest, our work focuses in particular on Ethiopia. For our first project, we are promoting literature for young people in Ethiopia. Together with a group of Ethiopian authors, we are developing books for children and young people which are to be provided to school libraries.

Our not-for-profit association

The association is devoted principally to the achievement of two goals:

(1) The planning and execution of art exhibitions, readings, film screenings and talks in our association premises in Genter Strasse, as well as at other venues. In these events, we focus on the promotion of an international ethos, tolerance in all areas of culture and the concept of international understanding.

(2) The implementation of projects in the area of development cooperation – our initiative “Promotion of literature for young people in Ethiopia” or our initiative “Artists for Cap Anamur” (a collection of art for the benefit of the Cologne aid organisation “Cap Anamur”) are two examples worth mentioning here.

If you are interested in the work of our association, and you would like to get personally involved with what we do, then please get in touch with us…
