Color / Amharic\, with English subtitles \nIn contemporary Ethiopia\, the exodus of a farming community is interrupted when the patriarch of a prominent family disappears from his grave. Tessema\, his son\, begins to question the Church‘s divine explanation\, forcing him to launch his own investigation. \n* \nKEEPING THREADS ALIVE \nby Yeabsira Eshetu Mandefro (Ethiopia 2025) \n7 Min. Color / Amharic\, with English subtitles \nThis short film by Ethiopian filmmaker Yeabsira Eshetu Mandefro journeys into Addis Ababa to document the life and work of Getabalew Abebe\, a master craftsman devoted to the traditional weaving of the Habesha Kemis — a beloved cultural garment in Ethiopia. \n* \nTHE RIVER \nby Herrana Addisu (Ethiopia 2024) \n18 Min. Color / Amharic\, with English subtitles \nA short film documenting Ethiopian musician Hailu Mergia‘s life as the leader of the Walias Band in the 1970s\, his immigration to the United States and his subsequent re-emergence as a performer in 2014. \n* \nHOW WAS MY DAY \nby Hanna Tadesse Haile (Ethiopia 2016) \n4 Min. Color / Amharic\, with English subtitles \n“How was my day?” is a short film that profoundly depicts the pressing issue of gender discrimination in Ethiopia and other parts of the world. \n* \nI‘VE SEEN SO MUCH \nby Gonzalo Guajardo (Ethiopia 2017) \n5 Min. Color / Amharic\, with English subtitles \nGonzalo Guajardo’s short documentary “I’ve Seen So Much” begins with a close-up of a nail being hammered into a plank. What makes this common action distinct is seeing both hammer and nail confidently held by two pairs of toes. Possessor of these nimble extremities is film subject Ethiopian carpenter Sintayehu Tesale. \n*

SUMMARY:Reading: NASRIN SIEGE – THE JOURNEY AHEAD – Life between Iran\, Germany\, and Africa
DESCRIPTION:Nasrin Siege takes us on a journey from her childhood in Iran to her youth in 1960s Germany and her adult life in Africa. She tells of exclusion and friendship\, of encounters with traditional healers\, street children\, and the Maasai\, as well as with Jane Goodall and Henning Mankell. With her “wanderings” to other countries\, her publications\, and her aid and education projects for children and women\, she builds bridges between cultures—and finds a home that lives in people and stories. \nNasrin Siege\, born in Tehran\, Iran\, in 1950\, studied psychology and education in Kiel. After completing her studies\, she worked in a psychotherapy clinic in Stuttgart and in an addiction clinic near Frankfurt. From 1983 to 2016\, she lived in Tanzania\, Zambia\, Madagascar\, and Ethiopia. In Tanzania\, she wrote stories and poems\, and in Zambia\, she wrote her first children’s book\, which was followed by further children’s and young adult books. In 1996\, she founded the association “Hilfe für Afrika e.V.” (Help for Africa)\, which continues to support aid projects in Africa to this day. She received the Children’s Book Prize of the City of Berlin (1993) and the Two Wings Award (2006) for her social commitment and her services to collecting African fairy tales. In 2022\, Nasrin Siege was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her voluntary work in Africa. \n“The account of a life spent on equal terms with people of different appearances\, origins\, beliefs\, customs\, and traditions\, accepting not only the equality of all\, but also that of their desires\, longings\, love\, worries\, and suffering.” \nRuth Weiss (✝)\, writer\, business journalist\, and honorary president of the PEN Center for German-speaking Authors Abroad. \n“An autobiography that is both a description of the present and a call to action for the future.” \nBarbara Bingel\, Chairwoman of the Horst Bingel Foundation for Literatur \n  \nAdmission is free\, donations are welcome. SUMMARY:Reading: ‘Notes from a little Black Girl’ plus concert with JP Lewis & Robin Shepherd.
DESCRIPTION:ARTISTS FOR CAP ANAMUR PRESENTS: \nReading: ‘Notes from a little Black Girl’ plus concert with JP Lewis & Robin Shepherd. \nSaturday\, 18 October 2025 | 7 pm (doors open from 6 pm) \nReading from the Insta blog @notesfromalittleblackgirl. Beamlak came to Germany from Ethiopia seven years ago at the age of 17. In her texts\, she tells short prose episodes about life in her new home in Düsseldorf: \n“I´m a little black girl (literally I’m 5 feet tall on a good day) who moved from Ethiopia to Germany at 17. I’m 7 Years deep into this „new life“ and honestly? Still figuring out. I didn’t come here to tell you how to survive immigration\, or explain racism\, or give you a step-by-step on how to start over in a country that sometimes forgets you exist. I’m just here to talk. About what it’s been like. For me. I’ll write about the weird stuff. The frustrating stuff. The beautiful moments too. Like what it means to build a life when home is a moving target. Or how music\, random bus rides\, and books like Americanah have held me together more times than i can count.” \nThe two Cologne-based singer-songwriters JP Lewis and Robin Shepherd will play songs from their repertoire. Inspired by musical role models such as Lenny Kravitz\, Prince\, Pharrell Williams and Curtis Mayfield\, JP Lewis presents a modern mix of indie rock paired with elements of 70s soul and funk. As a singer/songwriter\, Robin Shepherd combines catchy folk melodies with harmonious acoustic guitar playing\, powerful\, soulful vocals and inward-looking lyrics. \nThe reading will be held in English\, admission is free – we ask for donations for Cap Anamur / Deutsche Not-Ärzte e.V. \nUnfortunately we can only offer 34 places. If you would like to make a reservation\, please send us a short email to: post@art-of-buna.de \nDOWNLOAD FLYER

SUMMARY:Monday cinema: Among Us Women - በኛ በሴቶች መካከል
DESCRIPTION:Among Us Women – በኛ በሴቶች መካከል\nSarah Noa Bozenhardt\, Daniel Abate Tilahun \nDocumentary film Ethiopia\, Germany\, 2021\, 92 minutes\nAmharic\, English\, subtitles: German \nIn rural Ethiopia\, the staff of a health centre are fighting against maternal mortality. They tirelessly encourage women to give birth in the clinic. But the reservations are great\, as are the practical hurdles. How are heavily pregnant women supposed to arrive on time if the ambulance only arrives after hours or not at all? Against medical advice\, Hulu Ager decides to give birth at home\, accompanied by a traditional midwife. \nThe film team captures moments of intimate community between Hulu Ager\, the midwives and other women with a palpable familiarity. At the edges of the central conflict\, the many challenges they have to overcome in a patriarchal society become visible. In the hairdressing salon under the steam bonnet\, the debates are the liveliest: Welela\, a medical professional\, reports that she does not feel any pleasure during sex because of her circumcision. ‘You just have to prepare yourself\,’ another customer advises her. Sometimes it helps to get drunk. For the cheeky hairdresser\, however\, one thing is certain: bad sex is a reason for divorce. The women share their wishes and needs with each other\, experience solidarity and gather courage for small and large acts of awakening and resistance. Men have a place here as extras at best. \nAdmission free\, donation welcome. Doors open from 6 pm. \nUnfortunately\, we can only offer 34 seats for film screenings. He becomes a mod\, adopts their trendy style\, listens to ska music and seeks recognition. The movement will never let him go\, but the transitions to other subcultures are fluid – and dangerous. \nTobi Dahmen’s autobiographical coming-of-age graphic novel is a haunting tale about the love of music\, youth culture and the danger of going down the wrong path. \nSaturday\, March 22\, 6 p.m. (doors open at 5 p.m.)\nAdmission free\, donation welcome \nUnfortunately\, we are fully booked for the event.

SUMMARY:MONTAGSKINO: SMALL AXE – LOVERS ROCK
DESCRIPTION:Director: Steve McQueen\, GB 2020\, 70 min\, FSK 16\, OmdU \nWith the multi-award-winning five-part film series SMALL AXE about real stories of Caribbean immigrants in London in the 70s and 80s\, Steve McQueen (Oscar winner with 12 Years a Slave) approaches his own family history. The second film in this series\, LOVERS ROCK\, is the musical that McQueen always wanted to make. \nIt’s Saturday night and Martha has sneaked out of her parents’ house in Ealing. She meets up with her friend Patty\, and together the two teenagers take a double-decker bus to Notting Hill. Their destination is Cynthia’s house\, where she is throwing a party for her 17th birthday. A DJ group called Mercury Sound\, led by DJ Parker B\, has set up a sound system to create the right atmosphere with music. One by one\, Parker B lures the guests onto the dance floor. When Martha loses sight of her friend\, she makes the acquaintance of Franklyn. After a night of intoxicating music and dancing together\, she and Patty drive back in the early hours of the morning and Martha sneaks into her bedroom just in time for her mother to wake her up to go to church. \nMonday\, October 14\, 2024\, 7 pm (doors open from 6 pm)\nAdmission free / donation welcome \nUnfortunately\, we have very limited space and can only offer 34 seats for events.
