SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: TOBI DAHMEN - BICYCLE MOD
DESCRIPTION:Mods\, skinheads\, scooter boys – the British subculture also reaches the small town of Wesel\, where Tobi grows up in the eighties and nineties. He becomes a mod\, adopts their trendy style\, listens to ska music and seeks recognition. The movement will never let him go\, but the transitions to other subcultures are fluid – and dangerous. \nTobi Dahmen’s autobiographical coming-of-age graphic novel is a haunting tale about the love of music\, youth culture and the danger of going down the wrong path. \nSaturday\, March 22\, 6 p.m. (doors open at 5 p.m.)\nAdmission free\, donation welcome \nUnfortunately\, we are fully booked for the event.

SUMMARY:Monday cinema: Among Us Women - በኛ በሴቶች መካከል
DESCRIPTION:Among Us Women – በኛ በሴቶች መካከል\nSarah Noa Bozenhardt\, Daniel Abate Tilahun \nDocumentary film Ethiopia\, Germany\, 2021\, 92 minutes\nAmharic\, English\, subtitles: German \nIn rural Ethiopia\, the staff of a health centre are fighting against maternal mortality. They tirelessly encourage women to give birth in the clinic. But the reservations are great\, as are the practical hurdles. How are heavily pregnant women supposed to arrive on time if the ambulance only arrives after hours or not at all? Against medical advice\, Hulu Ager decides to give birth at home\, accompanied by a traditional midwife. \nThe film team captures moments of intimate community between Hulu Ager\, the midwives and other women with a palpable familiarity. At the edges of the central conflict\, the many challenges they have to overcome in a patriarchal society become visible. In the hairdressing salon under the steam bonnet\, the debates are the liveliest: Welela\, a medical professional\, reports that she does not feel any pleasure during sex because of her circumcision. ‘You just have to prepare yourself\,’ another customer advises her. Sometimes it helps to get drunk. For the cheeky hairdresser\, however\, one thing is certain: bad sex is a reason for divorce. The women share their wishes and needs with each other\, experience solidarity and gather courage for small and large acts of awakening and resistance. Men have a place here as extras at best. \nAdmission free\, donation welcome. Doors open from 6 pm. \nUnfortunately\, we can only offer 34 seats for film screenings. SUMMARY:Reading: ‘Notes from a little Black Girl’ plus concert with JP Lewis & Robin Shepherd.
DESCRIPTION:ARTISTS FOR CAP ANAMUR PRESENTS: \nReading: ‘Notes from a little Black Girl’ plus concert with JP Lewis & Robin Shepherd. \nSaturday\, 18 October 2025 | 7 pm (doors open from 6 pm) \nReading from the Insta blog @notesfromalittleblackgirl. Beamlak came to Germany from Ethiopia seven years ago at the age of 17. In her texts\, she tells short prose episodes about life in her new home in Düsseldorf: \n“I´m a little black girl (literally I’m 5 feet tall on a good day) who moved from Ethiopia to Germany at 17. I’m 7 Years deep into this „new life“ and honestly? Still figuring out. I didn’t come here to tell you how to survive immigration\, or explain racism\, or give you a step-by-step on how to start over in a country that sometimes forgets you exist. I’m just here to talk. About what it’s been like. For me. I’ll write about the weird stuff. The frustrating stuff. The beautiful moments too. Like what it means to build a life when home is a moving target. Or how music\, random bus rides\, and books like Americanah have held me together more times than i can count.” \nThe two Cologne-based singer-songwriters JP Lewis and Robin Shepherd will play songs from their repertoire. Inspired by musical role models such as Lenny Kravitz\, Prince\, Pharrell Williams and Curtis Mayfield\, JP Lewis presents a modern mix of indie rock paired with elements of 70s soul and funk. As a singer/songwriter\, Robin Shepherd combines catchy folk melodies with harmonious acoustic guitar playing\, powerful\, soulful vocals and inward-looking lyrics. \nThe reading will be held in English\, admission is free – we ask for donations for Cap Anamur / Deutsche Not-Ärzte e.V. \nUnfortunately we can only offer 34 places. If you would like to make a reservation\, please send us a short email to: post@art-of-buna.de \nDOWNLOAD FLYER

She tells of exclusion and friendship\, of encounters with traditional healers\, street children\, and the Maasai\, as well as with Jane Goodall and Henning Mankell. With her “wanderings” to other countries\, her publications\, and her aid and education projects for children and women\, she builds bridges between cultures—and finds a home that lives in people and stories. \nNasrin Siege\, born in Tehran\, Iran\, in 1950\, studied psychology and education in Kiel. After completing her studies\, she worked in a psychotherapy clinic in Stuttgart and in an addiction clinic near Frankfurt. From 1983 to 2016\, she lived in Tanzania\, Zambia\, Madagascar\, and Ethiopia. She received the Children’s Book Prize of the City of Berlin (1993) and the Two Wings Award (2006) for her social commitment and her services to collecting African fairy tales. In 2022\, Nasrin Siege was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her voluntary work in Africa. \n“The account of a life spent on equal terms with people of different appearances\, origins\, beliefs\, customs\, and traditions\, accepting not only the equality of all\, but also that of their desires\, longings\, love\, worries\, and suffering.” \nRuth Weiss (✝)\, writer\, business journalist\, and honorary president of the PEN Center for German-speaking Authors Abroad. \n“An autobiography that is both a description of the present and a call to action for the future.” \nBarbara Bingel\, Chairwoman of the Horst Bingel Foundation for Literatur \n  \nAdmission is free\, donations are welcome. SUMMARY:READING: Adrian Kasnitz - Mister Biller's Yellow Hat
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, June 2\, 2026 – 7:00 p.m. (Doors open at 6:00 p.m.). \nAdmission free\, donation welcome. Unfortunately\, we can only accommodate 34 people at our readings. If you would like to make a reservation\, please send a brief email to: post@art-of-buna.de \nHost: Jonas Linnebank \n“Mister Biller’s yellow hat is hanging in the coat check at the café in Prenzlauer Berg where my friend Mathieu works. I put it on after paying for my two cappuccinos and stroll through the neighborhood with a mischievous grin on my face\, as if I wanted to provoke the people on the street.” \nChance encounters that shape the course of events for quite some time—or that are simply annoying. Travel acquaintances and their quirks. Friendships that fall apart\, and reunions that don’t go smoothly. Adrian Kasnitz’s new stories are a strange hat that you put on to transform yourself and provoke. They take place in Cologne and Berlin\, they lead to Leipzig and Prague\, they veer off to Albania\, Latvia\, London\, and Shenzhen. Sometimes you wish you hadn’t put on that strange hat. \nAdrian Kasnitz\, born on the Baltic Sea coast\, raised in the Westphalian mountains\, studied in Cologne and Prague\, and now lives in Cologne as a writer\, editor\, and event organizer. In addition to the nine volumes of Kalendarium #1 through #9 (parasitenpresse 2015–2024) published to date\, his most recent works include Im Sommer hatte ich eine Umarmung (parasitenpresse 2023) and Glückliche Niederlagen\, the bilingual prose collection Pierre Huyghe hired me (parasitenpresse 2019)\, as well as the novel Bessermann. For his literary work\, he has been honored with awards including the Dieter-Wellershoff-Stipendium from the City of Cologne. Since 2019\, he has been part of the team curating the European Literature Festival Cologne-Kalk (ELK).

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Tosin Salako Meets Duo CoFe
DESCRIPTION:From September 24 to 27\, 2026\, the 12th European Jazz Conference (EJC 2026) will take place in Cologne—marking its first time in Germany. As part of this event\, Nigerian Afrojazz singer Tosin Salako will also be visiting our city. The idea for a concert in our gallery came about quite spontaneously and on short notice. \nOn Friday\, September 25\, starting at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.)\, you can catch these artists performing live at our venue: \nTosin Salako (Nigeria\, vocals\, etc.)\nFe Fritschi (Cologne\, accordion)\nCoco Kausch (Cologne\, violin) \n»Nigeria’s Rising Afrojazz Prince«\nTosin Salako is a musician\, singer\, songwriter\, arranger\, and festival curator from southwestern Nigeria. As an Afro-jazz artist\, his compositions blend jazz with African musical traditions\, always showcasing his impressive three-octave vocal range to the fullest. Salako has established himself as a versatile artist\, music director\, and cultural ambassador\, and performs regularly both in Nigeria and internationally. \nFe Fritschi studied jazz piano in Mainz with Pablo Held and Sebastian Sternal after having already completed his studies in classical accordion. As a pianist and accordionist\, he has shared the stage with greats such as Colin Vallon and Norma Winstone. \nBorn in Bonn in 1984\, Coco Kausch grew up in France. He has lived in Cologne since 2007\, where he studied jazz violin at the College of Music and Dance. \nThe great thing is: None of us knows what will happen tonight. The musicians don’t have a set repertoire. Evenings like this often hold a moment of magic. We have three outstanding musicians here—but the outcome is completely up in the air… \nUnfortunately\, the concert is completely sold out. \n  \nDOWNLOAD FLYER

SUMMARY:Reading and Discussion: Parallel Existences – Sonja Frenzel & Christa Morgenrath
DESCRIPTION:Der Gorilla Lehrling \nby Billy Kahora\, translated by \nAnn-Kathrin Kranz \n  \nDie Alchemie der Seventh Street \nby Brian Chikwava\, translated by \nJulia Königs \n  \nTwo stories from Kenya and Zimbabwe tell of people who are marginalized by society or have turned their backs on it—people who always stand somewhat apart from the supposed norm. \nThey are taken from the anthology *Parallel Existences* (edited by Stephanie Kreiner and Sonja Frenzel). This anthology brings together seven stories from three African countries. All of the authors of these stories were either shortlisted for or are winners of the prestigious Caine Prize for African Writing. Thus\, this anthology brings together seven outstanding texts by young authors from African countries\, translated and edited by young\, up-and-coming translators and editors from the “Über Übersetzen” project at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. \nThat evening\, Christa Morgenrath will speak with Sonja Frenzel about translation processes and the creation of the anthology. Sonja Frenzel will read the German translations of the two stories. \nAdmission is free; donations are welcome. Unfortunately\, we can only offer 34 spots. SUMMARY:Reading: Beamlak – *Notes from a Little Black Girl* and Concert: Sarah Tsehaye & dartel
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 7\, 2026\, 7:00 p.m. (Doors open at 6:00 p.m.) \nReading from the Instagram blog: “Notes from a Little Black Girl”. Beamlak came to Germany from Ethiopia eight years ago\, at the age of 17. In her writing\, she describes life in her new home\, Düsseldorf\, through short prose vignettes: \n» I´m a little black girl (literally I’m 5 feet tall on a good day) who moved from Ethiopia to Germany at 17. I’m 8 Years deep into this „new life“ and honestly? Still figuring out. I didn’t come here to tell you how to survive immigration\, or explain racism\, or give you a step-by-step on how to start over in a country that sometimes forgets you exist. I’m just here to talk. About what it’s been like. For me. I’ll write about the weird stuff. The frustrating stuff. The beautiful moments too. Like what it means to build a life when home is a moving target. Or how music\, random bus rides\, and books like Americanah have held me together more times than i can count. « \nIn addition\, Cologne-based singer-songwriter Sarah Tsehaye will perform songs from her repertoire. She will be accompanied by dartel . \nSarah Tsehaye is an Afro-German singer\, singer-songwriter\, and facilitator for self-empowerment and vocal improvisation. Through her music\, she creates spaces for connection\, expression\, and shared experiences. In her set\, she performs songs from her debut album *Life Has Just Begun* as well as selected covers that have been a part of her repertoire for many years. Some of her songs were created in collaboration with dartel (Daniele Elia). The Italian-born multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter\, and producer blends influences from funk\, soul\, house\, hip-hop\, and rock. With his feel for groove and soundscapes\, he accompanies Sarah and shapes their shared sound. \nThe reading will be held in English. Admission is free; donations are welcome. SUMMARY:Monday Movie Night: Wax & Gold
DESCRIPTION:Wax & Gold\nRuth Beckermann\, Austria / Italy 2026\nGerman\, English\, Italian\, Amharic with English subtitles\n97 minutes\, color & black-and-white \n  \nIn the late 1960s—a defining decade for Africa—Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie opened the Hilton Addis Ababa\, a grand hotel that became a controversial symbol of his hopes for the continent’s future\, but also of his own self-aggrandizement. Ruth Beckermann takes up residence at the hotel and immerses herself in Ethiopia’s past and present. In doing so\, she navigates between the familiar and the foreign\, between fact and fiction. Her search for historical truth unfolds as a critical examination full of contradictions\, insights\, and moments of enlightenment. Beckermann combines archival footage of the emperor with contemporary conversations and interviews at the hotel\, while also weaving her own reflections as a European woman into the film. At the same time\, she offers glimpses into life outside the opulent hotel\, where workers stand in long lines at bus stops and the skyline is dominated by the skeletons of unfinished high-rises. \n  \nUnfortunately\, we can only offer 33 seats for film screenings.
