DESCRIPTION:From September 24 to 27\, 2026\, the 12th European Jazz Conference (EJC 2026) will take place in Cologne—marking its first time in Germany. As part of this event\, Nigerian Afrojazz singer Tosin Salako will also be visiting our city. The idea for a concert in our gallery came about quite spontaneously and on short notice. \nOn Friday\, September 25\, starting at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.)\, you can catch these artists performing live at our venue: \nTosin Salako (Nigeria\, vocals\, etc.)\nFe Fritschi (Cologne\, accordion)\nCoco Kausch (Cologne\, violin) \n»Nigeria’s Rising Afrojazz Prince«\nTosin Salako is a musician\, singer\, songwriter\, arranger\, and festival curator from southwestern Nigeria. As an Afro-jazz artist\, his compositions blend jazz with African musical traditions\, always showcasing his impressive three-octave vocal range to the fullest. Salako has established himself as a versatile artist\, music director\, and cultural ambassador\, and performs regularly both in Nigeria and internationally. \nFe Fritschi studied jazz piano in Mainz with Pablo Held and Sebastian Sternal after having already completed his studies in classical accordion. As a pianist and accordionist\, he has shared the stage with greats such as Colin Vallon and Norma Winstone. \nBorn in Bonn in 1984\, Coco Kausch grew up in France. He has lived in Cologne since 2007\, where he studied jazz violin at the College of Music and Dance. \nThe great thing is: None of us knows what will happen tonight. The musicians don’t have a set repertoire. Evenings like this often hold a moment of magic. The music from the 1960s and 70s speaks of hope and the desire for an independent nation. The German band sets off on a journey to Africa to record an album there with musical greats such as Cheick Tidiane Seck\, Sory Bamba\, Abdoulaye Diabaté\, and Salif Keita.

DESCRIPTION:Der Gorilla Lehrling \nby Billy Kahora\, translated by \nAnn-Kathrin Kranz \n  \nDie Alchemie der Seventh Street \nby Brian Chikwava\, translated by \nJulia Königs \n  \nTwo stories from Kenya and Zimbabwe tell of people who are marginalized by society or have turned their backs on it—people who always stand somewhat apart from the supposed norm. \nThey are taken from the anthology *Parallel Existences* (edited by Stephanie Kreiner and Sonja Frenzel). This anthology brings together seven stories from three African countries. All of the authors of these stories were either shortlisted for or are winners of the prestigious Caine Prize for African Writing. Thus\, this anthology brings together seven outstanding texts by young authors from African countries\, translated and edited by young\, up-and-coming translators and editors from the “Über Übersetzen” project at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. \nThat evening\, Christa Morgenrath will speak with Sonja Frenzel about translation processes and the creation of the anthology. Beamlak came to Germany from Ethiopia eight years ago\, at the age of 17. In her writing\, she describes life in her new home\, Düsseldorf\, through short prose vignettes:  \n» I´m a little black girl (literally I’m 5 feet tall on a good day) who moved from Ethiopia to Germany at 17. I’m 8 Years deep into this „new life“ and honestly? Still figuring out. I didn’t come here to tell you how to survive immigration\, or explain racism\, or give you a step-by-step on how to start over in a country that sometimes forgets you exist. I’m just here to talk. About what it’s been like. For me. I’ll write about the weird stuff. The frustrating stuff. The beautiful moments too. Like what it means to build a life when home is a moving target. Or how music\, random bus rides\, and books like Americanah have held me together more times than i can count. « \nIn addition\, Cologne-based singer-songwriter Sarah Tsehaye will perform songs from her repertoire. She will be accompanied by dartel . \nSarah Tsehaye is an Afro-German singer\, singer-songwriter\, and facilitator for self-empowerment and vocal improvisation. Through her music\, she creates spaces for connection\, expression\, and shared experiences. In her set\, she performs songs from her debut album *Life Has Just Begun* as well as selected covers that have been a part of her repertoire for many years. Some of her songs were created in collaboration with dartel (Daniele Elia). The Italian-born multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter\, and producer blends influences from funk\, soul\, house\, hip-hop\, and rock. With his feel for groove and soundscapes\, he accompanies Sarah and shapes their shared sound.  \nThe reading will be held in English. Admission is free; donations are welcome. Problems like this are the least of the concerns for the only symphony orchestra in Central Africa. In the fifteen years of its existence\, the musicians have survived two coups\, several crises\, and a war. Yet there is a focus on the music\, a hope for a better future.
