Angelo Sanougah »Miva Kpɔ – come and seen«

Nothing is created, nothing is lost, everything is constantly changing – transforming in this world. Nothing is added, nothing disappears, everything is created again and again on my canvas. My canvas seems to soak up everything and absorb it at the same time: My dreams, my fears, the mystery, the pure sounds of my soul and the colours that come from what-knows-where. Everything is in motion and rest is only an illusion. Movements of the brush, of the palette knife, tumbling through the reliefs of the cardboard – other elements that come together on my canvas. Everything glides like a breeze through gigantic hands – and I capture it all with my colours on the canvas, which I scratch, tear and burn.

Angelo Sanougah was born and grew up in Lomé, Togo. He discovered his artistic talent at school and made it his vocation at an early age. Before setting up his own business as an artist and craftsman, he completed three training courses: in art painting with a well-known Togolese artist; in fabric processing (e.g. batik) in Cape Coast/Ghana and in ‘advertising art’ (e.g. printing T-shirts or making neon signs).

He has lived from and with his art since 1989 and has had exhibitions in several West African countries as well as in Germany, Belgium and France. Sanougah also ran a batik studio, where he also offered kruse. Angelo Sanougah came to Germany in 2014 and now lives with his wife in Cologne.
