With the multi-award-winning five-part film series SMALL AXE about real stories of Caribbean immigrants in London in the 70s and 80s, Steve McQueen (Oscar winner with 12 Years a Slave) approaches his own family history. The second film in this series, LOVERS ROCK, is the musical that McQueen always wanted to make.

It’s Saturday night and Martha has sneaked out of her parents’ house in Ealing. She meets up with her friend Patty, and together the two teenagers take a double-decker bus to Notting Hill. Their destination is Cynthia’s house, where she is throwing a party for her 17th birthday. A DJ group called Mercury Sound, led by DJ Parker B, has set up a sound system to create the right atmosphere with music. One by one, Parker B lures the guests onto the dance floor. When Martha loses sight of her friend, she makes the acquaintance of Franklyn. After a night of intoxicating music and dancing together, she and Patty drive back in the early hours of the morning and Martha sneaks into her bedroom just in time for her mother to wake her up to go to church.
