With the multi-award-winning five-part film series SMALL AXE about real stories of Caribbean immigrants in London in the 70s and 80s, Steve McQueen (Oscar winner with 12 Years a Slave) approaches his own family history. The second film in this series, LOVERS ROCK, is the musical that McQueen always wanted to make.
Nardos, an Azmari singer from Addis Ababa, has the dream of using her music to tell stories about the lives of ordinary people. In her search for stories for her songs, she meets Gennet, a poet who lives on the street with her children. As Nardos places the lives of Ethiopian women, their visions and strength at the center of her creation, we dive deeper and deeper into a rapidly changing country.
Two twelve-year-old boys grow up together in a remote village in Ethiopia – until a single photo awakens big dreams in both of them and changes their lives forever: Solomon secretly leaves the village and heads for the urban jungle of Addis Ababa to become a photographer. Abdi, on the other hand, stays and trains. He wants to become a famous long-distance runner like Haile Gebrselassie. The two, who grew up like brothers, matured into men separately. Years later, when Abdi is nominated for the Ethiopian national running team and moves to Addis Ababa, he hardly believes that Solomon is still alive. But an inner voice tells him to look for his old friend …
