Nahosenay Negussie

Nahosenay Negussie belongs to a young generation of Ethiopian artists who have been able to establish themselves internationally. Negussie was born in 1987 in Addis Ababa, where he still lives and works today. In 2013, he completed his studies in graphic design at the School of Fine Arts and Design with distinction. His career quickly took off when he was accepted into the prestigious Japanese Art Promotion Program in 2012. In the same year, Negussie was also a founding member of the Moged Fine Art Studio in Addis Ababa.

In the following years, Negussie’s works were shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the National Museum, UNECA, Radisson Blue Hotel, Alliance Ethio-Francis, Art of Ethiopia, etc. Since 2016, the Create Hub Gallery / Akku Project has represented Nahosenay Negussie in Dubai, UAE. In 2016, works by the artist were also shown for the first time in a solo exhibition at the National Congress of Heights in Washington, DC.

As an artist, Negussie has also created large-format paintings in the entrance hall of the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Jupiter International Hotel in Addis Ababa.

Today, works by Nahosenay Negussie can be found in both public and private collections – in Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and the USA. We are showing a selection of his works for the first time in Germany.

Sami Gebremariam

Sami Gebremariam was born in Eritrea and grew up in Ethiopia. Gebremariam has lived in Germany since 2011. After studying art in Addis Ababa, he worked as a freelancer in his own studio. Since his arrival in Sauerland, he has now returned to his work as a freelance artist: He was part of an exhibition with the Künstlerbund Lennestadt in 2015. In October 2015, Gebremariam showed his first solo exhibition “Wege der Hoffnung” (Paths of Hope). In 2016, he then presented his work in various exhibitions – for example at the Kulturbahnhof Grevenbrück and at Kunst im Park, Freudenberg. He also took part in Street-Art Colonia for the first time in 2016. Gebremariam also gives voluntary painting courses for children.

Many of Sami Gebremariam’s paintings show large, intricate, graphic structures full of coded messages. Symbols from East African culture always play a decisive role. Gebremariam uses letters from the Geez alphabet, for example, or integrates small graphic objects from the culture of his homeland.

In the spring of this year, we already showed works by Gebremariam as part of the group exhibition “Views on Ethiopia”. Now we have the opportunity to present a somewhat broader selection of his paintings.
