Contemporary East Africa II
Contemporary East Africa II – Modern Art from Sudan, Kenya & Uganda.
Maria Fischer ran the Tulifanya Gallery (now AKA Gallery) in Kampala, Uganda for almost 20 years from 1996 – one of the leading galleries for contemporary art in East Africa. She represented some of Uganda’s most important artists – including Geoffrey Mukasa, who died in 2009 – as well as artists from Sudan, Kenya and Mozambique. Today Maria Fischer lives in Bergisches Land, close to Cologne. After presenting artists from Rwanda and Burundi as part of the ‘Contemporary East Africa’ exhibition in 2017, we are now showing a selection of artists who have all exhibited at Tulifanya Gallery together with Maria Fischer. Completely different works that offer us a good insight into the contemporary art scene in East Africa over the last 15 years.
